'Hound baseball opens (finally) with sweep
PITTSBURG -- Freshman Kaden Schaffer belted out 5 hits in his college debut, including the game-winner in the first game of a doubleheader with North Central Missouri at Jaycee Ball Park here Monday.
This was the Greyhounds' first outing of the season after seeing a season-opening series against Southeast Nebraska postponed the previous weekend. In fact, Monday's games were originally scheduled for Saturday and Sunday's doubleheader against the Pirates here has been moved to Friday at Lions Field in Fort Scott.
The Greyhounds swept the Pirates Monday, winning game one 3-2 when Shaffer drove home Lance Barkley with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Barkley led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a fly ball out.
Barkley started the scoring by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a home run. Sam Gilbert drove in Josh Griffith with a double in the fifth to tie the score at 2-2.
Shaffer had 2 hits in the opener. Aaron Mason (1-0) was the winning pitcher, going five innings in relief. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out two.
Schaffer, Gilbert and Alex Copeland each had 3 hits in the second game. Copeland belted two doubles and a 2-run, 2-out homer in the bottom of the fourth that put Fort Scott ahead, 7-3. Shaffer followed that with a solo homer.
Barkley had 2 hits, including a solo homer in the second inning.
John Lynch (1-0) got the win, allowing 4 hits in three innings of work.
