Grapplers 4th at SEK tourney
CHANUTE --Fort Scott High School's wrestling team took fourth place at the Southeast Kansas League Dual Wrestling Tournament here Thursday with Chanute winning its second consecutive league title but its first under this new format.
The tournament was used to determine the league champion this season rather than having home-and-home duals scattered throughout the season. Chanute won all three of its duals in the bracketed format while Fort Scott, which is 8-6 overall in duals this season, won two and lost two.
The Tigers defeated Coffeyville in the first round, 60-15. In the championship semifinals, Chanute was a 53-28 winner.
Fort Scott beat Labette County, 45-22, in the consolation semifinals. Independence took the third-place match, 42-33.
Chanute went on to beat Pittsburg in the finals, 35-34.
Three of the Tigers went 4-0 on the day. Jacob Durossette (30-2), ranked No. 1 at 145 pounds in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, received a forfeit from Coffeyville, took a 12-0 major decision from Chanute's Brady Vogel, pinned Mitch Kelly of Labette County, and took a 3-2 decision over Independence's Jordan Mead, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A.
Jerad Heckman (35-7), at 126 pounds, received a forfeit from Chanute and pinned his other three opponents, Keegan Deenihan of Coffeyville, Charlie Romero of Labette County, and Hunter Reed of Independence. Heckman moved up to 132 pounds for his match with Romero.
John Hughes (32-9), at 160, drew forfeits from Coffeyville and Independence and pinned Chanute's Jade Murphy and Labette County's Martin Woldum.
Charles Pytlowany was 3-0, winning all his matches by forfeit at either 220 or 285 pounds. Cole Stewart (21-9) was 3-1 at 120 and Jesse Hodge (8-15) was 3-1 at 170.
The Tigers will go to Burlington next weekend for the Class 4A Regional Tournament. Among the teams there will be SEK foes Chanute and Parsons and other schools including Baldwin, Columbus, Frontenac, Anderson County, Prairie View, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Spring Hill and Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail.
