Rienbolt scores 30 in Tiger girls' win
FRONTENAC -- Katren Rienbolt scored a "quiet" 30 points and Ashley Cook added 25 as Fort Scott High's girls led from start to finish and downed Kansas City (Mo.) Hogan Prep in Saturday's fifth-place game in the Kansas Army National Guard Tournament.
Rienbolt made 11 of 17 shots from the field as she became the first Tiger to score 30 since Jolee Sharp scored 33 in a win over Parsons on Feb. 16, 2010. Cook went 8 of 14 overall and 4 of 7 from 3-point range. And post Elisha Hasenplaugh added 11 points, hauled down 15 rebounds, picked up 4 steals (as did Cook) and handed out 3 assists (Maddi Allen also had 3).
"We asked her after the game what she thought she had. She said, 'I don't know; 14 or 15' It was sort of a quiet 30. I don't know how many 30's are quiet but it was impressive. Three people in double figures is a great thing for us."
The Tigers (8-3) led 9-0 with 5:16 to go, scoring 5 of those points off Rams turnovers. Hogan (11-6) committed 13 turnovers in the first quarter alone.
"We wanted to come out and set the tone, just like we did (Friday). The girls did a great job of doing that."
Fort Scott also scored the last 10 points of the period and went into the second quarter with a 24-7 lead. The Tigers scored only 7 points in the second as the Rams adjusted to the pressure and stopped turning the ball over so frequently. But Hogan made only 3 of 16 field-goal attempts in the period and still trailed 31-17 at the half.
Fort Scott scored 8 of the first 10 points of the third quarter and 8 of the last 9 in extending its lead to 47-26 going into the final stanza.
Cook's 3-point shot with 3:36 remaining gave Fort Scott it's biggest lead of 26 points, 62-36, with 3:36 to go.
The Tigers made 15 of 20 field-goal attempts in the second half and shot 48 percent for the game of 27 of 56. The Rams shot 31 percent on 18 of 58.
Kierra Isaiah and Dir'Rashua Robinson each had double-doubles for Hogan Prep. Isaiah scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds while Robinson had 18 of each.
Fort Scott outrebounded Hogan Prep 47-38 as Rienbolt, Cook and Jillian Lattimer each contributed 7 boards to the Tigers' total.
The Tigers played for the second straight day without senior Brianne Lawrence due to her nagging hamstring injury.
Fort Scott will face Riverton Tuesday night in a game recently scheduled between the schools. The game will be held at 6 p.m. at Pittburg State University's John Lance Arena.
Webb City's girls, the fourth seed, won the tournament title by beating Blue Valley Southwest in the finals. Southwest defeated the Tigers in the first round on Thursday night.
