Tiger teams beat Chanute in 1st round
Both of Fort Scott High's freshmen teams defeated Chanute in the first round of the home round-robin tournament at the FSHS gymnasium Monday night.
Tiger girls won 31-16 after leading 16-2 at the half. Fort Scott's boys took a 57-40 win after outscoring the Blue Comets 21-9 in the second quarter.
The tournament will conclude next Monday as each of the four teams will be required to play two games that day.
Tiger girls led 4-0 after one quarter as Haley Denton scored both baskets. The lead was 16-0 before Chanute finally scored with 35 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Comets fared better in the second half as they were outscored just 15-14.
Emily Hale led the Tigers with 10 points and 18 rebounds. She made all eight of her free throws. Denton followed with 8 points and 11 rebounds. Karlee Stanley also scored 8 points.
Lexi Kidwell, who scored Chanute's first basket, led the Comets with 7 points.
The Tigers outrebounded the Comets, 51-30.
Chanute's boys held a 5-0 lead before Jeron Poyner got Fort Scott on the board with 4:58 on the clock in the first quarter. The Tigers took the lead as the period ended on a layup by Kaleb Ashe.
With their second-quarter dominance, Fort Scott extended its lead to 30-16 at the half. Grant Goldston scored 10 points in the quarter for the Tigers.
The lead grew to 20 points, 43-23, after three periods.
Goldston led the Tigers with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Ashe added 11 points. Jarrett Lyon added 8 points.
Brooks Hartman led Chanute with 9 points.
Fort Scott outrebounded Chanute, 45-32.
The schedule for next Monday night has Fort Scott's girls facing Iola at 3 p.m. in the FSHS gymnaisum and Prairie View at 6 p.m. in the same building. Chanute will play Prairie View at 3 p.m. and Iola at 6 at Buck Run.
Fort Scott's boys will take on Iola at 4:30 and Prairie View at 7:30 in the FSHS gym and Chanute will face Prairie View at 4:30 and Iola at 7:30 at BRCC.
Fort Scott's varsity teams play at Frontenac Thursday through Saturday while the junior varsity squads will play at El Dorado Springs, Mo., Jan. 27, 29 and 30.
CORRECTION -- Stanley's point total was inadvertently omitted from a story about the girls' freshmen team that appeared in Saturday's edition. She scored 10 points in Thursday's game against Girard, according to the information turned in by freshmen assistant coach Brent Malone.
