Penny S. Smith

Penny S. Smith, 55, of Girard, died at 11:31 p.m., Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 in the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg where she entered Jan. 14.

Penny was born March 8, 1958 in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of Eugene and Jackie (Sharp) Munson. After Mr. Munson died, Penny was adopted by Joe Horton.

She grew up and attended schools in this area and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1976.

Penny married Luther A. Smith on Sept. 11, 1976 in Pittsburg. He survives of the home.

She worked as a nurse aid at the Heritage Nursing Home in Girard from 1978 until retiring in 2008.

Penny was a member of the Cherry Grove Baptist Church near Garland and the American Baptist Women. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, knitting and animals

Survivors, in addition to her husband, Luther, of the home are sons Sheldon Smith and his wife Alicia of Great Lakes, Ill.; Nathan Smith and his wife Christen of Blue Spring, Mo.; Andrew Smith and his fiancé May Maus of Girard; her mother of Girard; her grandchildren Timothy, Samantha, Corinne, Mauriana, Rylee Meghan, and Hannah Smith; a brother Sandy Horton and his wife Shari of Pittsburg; sisters Lynda Summers and her husband Bob of Joplin; Dana Cook and her husband James of Fort Worth, Texas.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Meghan Diane Smith, on Aug. 29, 2004; her father; her step-father, Joe Horton; a sister, Connie Munson; an infant brother.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the Cherry Grove Baptist Church near Garland with Rev. Dr. Dale Cummins officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery at rural Girard.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call may call after 2 p.m., Tuesday.
