Courthouse access limited

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

After Feb. 1, entering the Bourbon County Courthouse may not be as easy as it has been for the public.

As part of the county's security plan, the only doors the public will be allowed to access will be on the east side of the courthouse. One of those, which is a direct access to the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center, is compliant with the Americans with Disability Act.

Doors on the south and west sides of the courthouse will be locked to the public. Employees will have a separate entrance, accessible by a key card.

The security plan was created as a result of the county's filing for an exemption from the new state law that allows Conceal Carry permit holders to take weapons into public buildings.

The exemption means that weapons are not allowed in the courthouse.
