'Stars' lined up for annual dance contest
Fort Scott Community College's Fourth Annual "Dancing with our Stars" will take place on Feb. 15, at the Danny and Wilma Ellis Family Fine Arts Center, inside the auditorium. The matinee performance will begin at 3 p.m. and the second show is slotted for a 7 p.m. start time, with a dress rehearsal taking place at noon (closed to the public). This year's theme is "Broadway Edition" with dancers selecting songs with a Broadway show theme. The panel for the show will consist of three judges. The hosts for the show are Lindsay Madison, Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce executive director, and Paul Wright, Rotary Club president.
"I think it's a great way for the college to be able to share our facilities with the community, be able to have some community involvement and some community engagement," Clayton Tatro, FSCC president, said.
The show will feature four and five-year old dancers from the Susan Stern Student School of Dance in Fort Scott, who will perform "Broadway Baby" as the opening act. According to information provided by FSCC, each team will dance for a chosen charity, and those organizations will have booths at the matinee and evening performances. Additionally, audience members can vote for their favorite dancers by making a donation to their charity of chose. At the end of each performance, the couple getting the most donations at that performance will be declared the "People's Choice" winner. All money raised at the dancers' charity's booth will go to the charity they chose.
Last year's winning dance couple, Phil Hammons and Megan Felt, will perform the first dance after the intermission.
"We've had a good response this year to people wanting to be involved," Jill Warford, Gordon Parks center for culture & diversity director, said. This (event) brings in a lot of money to the charities and to Rotary (Club), which gets turned around in the community."
According to an FSCC press release relating to the event, "this year's dancers and their charities include Otie Thomas & Thelma Phillips dancing for Young Life; Wayne Armstrong & Allison Daly dancing for the American Cancer Society; Dave Martin & Chris Sather dancing for Big Brothers/Big Sisters; Lisa Bagnall and Tim Emerson, Jr. dancing for the Alzheimer's Association; Gina Findley & Travis Shelton dancing for United Way; Angela Meyer and Shawn O'Brien dancing for Relay for Life; Michael Dzbenski & Carly Hyer dancing for the Sharing Bucket; David Conradt & Karla Tersinar dancing for the Mercy Foundation; and Yolanda Gray & Ted Koller dancing for the Kansas Specialty Dog Service (KSDS) Organization."
"We're always excited to get individuals out to the campus," Tatro said. "And it's just a great way for us to showcase the facilities at the college and to be able to give back to the community. The effort that's put on with "Dancing with our Stars" is a great community service, it benefits so many people, so many organizations, that we're just excited to be a part of it."
Tickets will go on sale Jan. 20 (all seats reserved) and will be available for purchase at the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce. Tickers are $10 and $15 for VIP.
