Eagle girls beat host Cubs

HUMBOLDT -- Uniontown's girls evened their record at 1-1 on the young season as the Eagles defeated host Humboldt in the first round of the Cubs' season-opening round-robin tournament here Tuesday night.

Humboldt's boys, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, dropped the Eagle boys to 1-1 with a 61-52 decision.

Eagle girls led 10-6 after one and 26-13 at the half and were able to coast from there. DaNisha Robinson led Uniontown with 19 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and also picked up a pair of steals. Hannah Travis followed in scoring with 7 points and led in rebounding with 9. Mandie Ridge handed out 6 assists.

Joseph Duffey led Uniontown's boys with 17 points in a losing battle. However, head coach Jeremy Neville was happy with both his effort and how his team played.

"Joseph Duffey looked like the best player on the court at times with his rebounding and quickness off the floor," Neville said. "Our guys really hung in there and battled. We faced a lot of adversity in that game and continued to push through it."

Neville said fouls hurt both teams' effort. The team combined for 62 free-throw attempts.

"We had to break patterns and eventually drop out of our press because of foul trouble," Neville said.

Tournament play continues tonight as both teams will face Erie. The tournament concludes Friday night as the boys and girls both face Three Rivers League rival Crest.
