Wilma June Sampson
Wilma June Sampson, age 91, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died early Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at the home of her daughter near Devon, Kan. She was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Oil Hill, Kan., the daughter of Walter Woodson Burch and Mildred Irene Harper Burch. She married Harry C. Sampson on Nov. 16, 1944, at Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1988. Together they owned and operated Harry and Wilma's Tavern located on Market Street and also Wilma's Bar on Wall Street. Wilma enjoyed playing pool, fishing and gardening as well as spending time with her family.
Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Pack, Stambaugh, Ken., Frances Lewis and Karen Farmer, both of Bronson, Kan., and Shirley Monroe, Devon, Kan. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, a nephew and two nieces. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Bill Sampson; a daughter, Carol Keele; a granddaughter, Ranae Akers; a grandson, Jeff Jackley; two sisters, Rosalie Robinson and Doris Appleberry; and two sons-in-law.
Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct graveside services at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Oak Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. Memorials are suggested to Mercy Hospice and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Ft. Scott, KS 66701.
