FSMS girls sweep Jayhawk Jr. High

Fort Scott Middle School's girls pulled off another sweep Thursday night as the seventh- and eighth-grade "A" teams both defeated Jayhawk Junior High. The seventh grade won 20-5 and the eighth graders took a 27-8 win.

Jayhawk used some of its eighth graders in the seventh-grade contest as there are only five from the lower grade in the basketball program.

The seventh-grade (7-1) outscored Jayhawk 7-1 in the first quarter. The Tigers pitched a shutout in the second quarter to boost the margin to 13-1 at the half.

Alaina Allen, who led all scorers with 11 points, scored all of them in the first half, including a 3-point goal with 34 seconds left in the half.

Jayhawk managed only two field goals. But the Jayhawks did outrebound the Tigers, 27-22. Abby Humble, who also scored 5 points, led Fort Scott with 5 rebounds.

The Tigers forced 27 turnovers while committing just 15 themselves.

The eighth graders scored the game's first 8 points on their way to a 10-2 lead. They boosted the lead to 17-4 at the half.

Elizabeth Torres led Fort Scott with 8 points, 6 of those coming in the first quarter. Madison Cook and Skylear Brown each added 6 points and Kelsie Nelson scored 5.

Fort Scott (6-0) outrebounded Jayhawk, 35-23. Jenny Denton had 8 rebounds for the Tigers while Cook had 7.

Jayhawk made just 3 field goals on 32 shots while Fort Scott made 13 of 36 field-goal attempts. The Tigers also turned the ball over just 9 times.

The last home games for the seventh- and eighth-grade "A" and "B" teams will take place Tuesday. FSMS will face Independence at Buck Run Community Center with the first game scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
