J-Linn deals Eagles loss at quad
CHETOPA -- Uniontown's volleyball team won two of three matches here Tuesday night but one of the losses may have cost the Eagles an opportunity to win the Three Rivers League championship.
In the first match of the night, Uniontown lost to Jayhawk-Linn, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A by the Kansas Volleyball Association this week, in two sets by scores of 25-17, 25-13.
"Certainly disappointing, the Jayhawk match," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "I don't know where we were at. We did not play anywhere near our abilities."
It was the second win of the season for the Jayhawks over the Eagles. J-Linn won 26-24, 25-22 in the championship match of the TRL Pre-Season Tournament at Pleasanton on August 31.
Uniontown (6-1 TRL, 17-6 overall) came back to beat Marmaton Valley, 25-18, 26-24, and Chetopa, 25-14, 25-16.
"We did come back and started to play somewhat better against both (Marmaton Valley) and Chetopa," Hall said. "We are still struggling in the passing area, and (to) hold serve consistently. We will certainly continue to work on improving those aspects of our game."
Britney Stokes was credited with 5 assists versus Jayhawk-Linn, 14 in the Marmaton Valley match and 16 in the Chetopa dual. Hannah Travis led in kills against Jayhawk, 2, and Chetopa, 4, while Mandie Ridge topped that stat against Marmaton Valley with 4.
In junior varsity play, Uniontown lost to Jayhawk-Linn, 25-20, 25-23, and Marmaton Valley, 25-9, 25-20, and defeated Chetopa, 25-12, 25-8.
The Uniontown JV will play at Yates Center Monday. Both the varsity and JV play at Pleasanton with Crest also in attendance Tuesday in TRL play.
NOTES -- Uniontown fell out of the KVA Class 2A rankings this week mostly because four teams were put in after changing classes following the release of 2013-14 classes last Friday. Hillsboro moved from No. 1 in 3A to No. 1 in 2A. Remington also moved in from 3A while Olpe and St. John came up from 1A-Division I....
