7th graders rout Indy

Quarterback Tyler Gorman ran for three touchdowns and threw for another in the Fort Scott Middle School seventh-grade football team's 28-8 victory over Independence Thursday evening at Frary Field.
Meanwhile, Fort Scott's defense held the Bulldogs to 104 yards in offense, 65 of which came on Indy's late fourth-quarter touchdown drive after the outcome was no longer in doubt.
Gorman scored on the game's first play, keeping on an option play down the right sideline to score from 65 yards out just 23 seconds into the contest. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.
Gorman scored again on a fourth-down play from 15 yards out with 3:46 left in the first half. Coy Pollmeier scored the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-0 lead.
Zarius Goodman recovered a fumble on the first play of Indy's next possession, setting up a 37-yard scoring pass from Gorman to Matt Campbell with 3:13 before halftime. The 2-point conversion was no good.
The lead grew to 28-0 just as the third quarter ended as Gorman scored on a 14-yard run and Pollmeier took in the 2-point conversion.
Indy's score came with 19 seconds left in the game as Ben Whitaker scored on a 7-yard run and also ran in the 2-point conversion.
Gorman rushed for 104 yards on 9 carries and completed 4 of 6 passes for 98 yards. Campbell caught 2 passes for 76 yards.
The Tigers wrapped up the home portion of the schedule with a 2-1 record. They play the first of two road games to end the season Thursday evening at Labette County in Altamont.
