Fort Scott Middle School's football teams split with Parsons in a doubleheader at Frary Field Thursday night. The seventh grade lost 16-14 while the eighth grade took a 14-0 victory.

The seventh-grade Tigers scored on the game's first possession after a short kickoff. Coy Pollmeier scored on a 3-yard run with 4:28 on the clock. A run for the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Parsons scored 43 seconds before halftime on a 16-yard run by Josh Pierce. Zach McCarty scored the 2-point conversion to give the Vikings the lead.

Parsons scored on the second play of the second half, a 27-yard TD pass from Gage Friess to Luke Wolgamott. Pierce ran in the 2-point conversion to extend the Vikings' lead to 16-6.

The Tigers (1-1) needed just two plays to score as Tyler Gorman found Matt Campbell for a 48-yard scoring pass with 6:35 on the clock, just 18 seconds following Parsons' score. Treyton Wilson ran in the 2-pointer to bring Fort Scott within 16-14.

Parsons managed to play keep away for a great deal of the remainder of the game. Fort Scott had the ball for just one of the next 23 plays. However, the Tigers recovered a fumble at their own 27-yard line with 1:44 to go to give themselves one last chance.

Gorman found Campbell for 9 yards, then Pollmeier ran for the first down to the 38-yard line. Gorman scrambled for 2 yards, then threw to Nick Lawrence for 7 for a first down at the Parsons 47.

But the Vikings clamped down, causing a one-yard rushing loss and then intercepting a long pass as time ran out to hold on for the victory.

Gorman completed 6 of 10 passes for 115 yards. Five of those passes went to Campbell for 108 yards.

The Tigers managed only 28 yards on the ground on 15 rushes. Wilson was the leader with 20 yards on 5 carries and Pollmeier followed with 15 yards on 5 rushes.

On defense, Alec Michaud and Dalton Colvin each intercepted passes for the Tigers.

The first score of the eighth-grade contest came with 9.2 seconds left in the first half as Ben Daniels hauled in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Jones. The 2-point conversion was no good.

Jessie Lawrence moved to quarterback in the second half and scored Fort Scott's other touchdown on an 11-yard keeper around the left side with 1:06 left in the third quarter. Derek Bollinger's 2-point conversion run was successful. The drive was set up by a Jones interception at midfield that he returned to the Parsons 33.

Parsons held the ball just five plays before Gunnar Brown recovered a fumble. Fort Scott (2-0) held the ball all but one play in the final 7:06 and that Viking play was a pass that resulted in another interception by Jones with 1:42 to go in the game.

Jones completed all three of his passes for 22 yards. Daniels caught four passes in all for 30 yards. Lawrence was the Tigers' leading rusher with 48 yards on 9 rushes. Zarek Fewell followed with 33 yards on 5 carries. As a team, The Tigers rushed for 130 yards on 34 carries.

Parsons only ran 18 plays. The Vikings rushed for 42 yards on 14 carries and were 0 for 4 passing.

Both teams will play their final home games next Thursday. Kickoff of the seventh-grade game will be at 5 p.m., a half-hour earlier than the previous two home games. Independence will be the visiting team.

Some adjustments to the schedule should be noted by anyone who got theirs from the Tribune. The Sept. 30 date -- A Monday rather than a Thursday -- at Mound City against Jayhawk Junior High is only an eighth-grade game. It will kick off at 6 p.m.

The games against Labette County at Altamont are on Oct. 3 instead of Oct. 15. Both the seventh and eighth grades will play with the opening game at 5 p.m.

A seventh-grade game will be played at Chanute on Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. This will be a Tuesday night game rather than a Thursday game.
