Wallace Wayne Stringer

Wallace Wayne Stringer, 83, of Fort Scott, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 15, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. He was born March 4, 1930 in Hepler, Kan., the son of Dale and Angie Jewel (Bruce) Stringer. He married Marjorie VanMeter Dec. 30, 1954 in Thayer, Kan., and she survives of the home.

Wayne graduated from Hepler High School in 1948. He received his BS degree from Pittsburg State in 1959 and his Masters from the University of Georgia in 1967. He taught high school science at Melvern, Kan., Westminster, Colo., and Coffeyville, Kan., before coming to Fort Scott Community College, where he taught for 22 years.

Wayne served in the United States Army from 1952 until 1954 during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Gideon's, Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Camping Club, Pioneer Harvest Fiesta and the Area Agency on Aging board. He was also a member of the VFW and served on the VFW Honor Guard.

Wayne was a pilot and loved to take people for an airplane ride. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle. He did extensive carpentry work, building several new homes and remodeling many others. He liked to travel and spend time with his family.

In addition to his wife Marjorie, Wayne is survived by his children, Jim Stringer of Rogers, Ark., Rhonda Allen and husband Jim of Fort Scott, Kan., Randy Stringer and his wife Valerie of Bartlesville, Okla.; a sister, Maude Burns and husband Bob of Iola, Kan.; grandchildren, Christopher Stringer (Anndee), Jennifer Boggs (Ryan), Elizabeth Kinnaman (Ryan), Matthew Stringer, Hilary Hutchison, Scott Allen, and Marliss Allen; eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Stringer, brother, Eugene Bauder, and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Stringer.

Rev. Stephen Porter and Rev. Marvin George will officiate funeral services 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 at the first Southern Baptist Church in Fort Scott, under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the U.S. National Cemetery with Military Honors conducted at the cemetery by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Detail. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, Sept. 18, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
