Fourteen schools competed in the Fort Scott Invitational girls' golf tournament at Woodland Hills Golf Course Tuesday with nine of them represented among the 10 medalists in the meet.
Uniontown's girls, playing their first varsity meet of the season, finished in fourth place with a four-woman, nine-hole score of 220. Fort Scott finished fifth with a 224 in its second varsity outing of the year, a four-stroke improvement over their first tournament at Oswego on Sept. 3.
"Great tournament, good outcome for Fort Scott," FSHS head coach Karen Curran said. "We've worked hard in the last week of practice to close the gap between us and the other league schools and even though we shot really good scores, so did LC and Pitt. So, we still feel like we are right there in the mix of things and still have lots of room for improvement in the upcoming weeks."
Pittsburg was the team champion with a 214 followed by Labette County at 217 and Anderson County with a 218.
Fort Scott senior Morgan Robertson shot 50 to win the eighth-place individual medal while Uniontown's Jordan Mason came in with a 52 to earn ninth place.
"Morgan wanted so badly to break 50 in her last home tournament," Curran said. "And she was about 6 inches away from doing so at the last green.
"She again shot a career-low score for 9 holes and still isn't satisfied."
A scorecard playoff was needed to determine the winner following a tie at 43, won by Frontenac's Maggie Moody over Chanute's Abbe Funk. Coffeyville's Anna Pool was third with a 44.
Golfers from Parsons, Pittsburg and Anderson County also finished in the top 10 with ACHS the only school with two medalists.
Uniontown only had four golfers but they were bunched together in scoring, which helped get them their high finish, missing out on a team medal by just two strokes. Torrie Hathaway came in with a 54, which missed medaling by one stroke, Haven Bradbury scored 55 to tie for 14th, and Anna Oberle shot 59 in tying for 25th.
"I think our girls did a nice job considering this was our first meet of the season," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. "Jordan has made a lot of improvement from last year.
"This was one of the closest meets I've been a part of when you consider just 10 strokes separated the top five teams. It was anyone's tournament; it just came down to which teams would make the least mistakes and manage the course the best."
Emily Martin posted Fort Scott's next-best score of 56, which tied for 18th place. Then two players just moved up to varsity provided the third and fourth scores for the team total. Both Katie Brown and Camiren Defebaugh shot 59, which tied for 25th.
Hayden Shelden improved from her season-opening score by 7 strokes to finish tied for 34th with a 61. Maggie McDonald, on the other hand, shot 9 strokes higher than at Oswego last week and finished in a tie for 40th with a 63.
According to Curran, spotted just before she went off to check on McDonald off the first tee, there were more teams and players in this tournament than at most Regionals. Sixty-one golfers were entered. Most Regionals in Class 4-3-2-1A have just 12 teams.
Fort Scott's golf team will be in Girard for its first 18-hole tournament of the season at 9 a.m. Thursday morning. Uniontown's team will play in the Pomona-West Franklin invitational, which begins at 1 p.m. Thursday.
