Mildred Louise (Boyle) Leonard

Mildred Louise (Boyle) Leonard went to be with the Lord on July 3, 2013 following a lengthy illness. Mildred was born on Dec. 5, 1933 to Charles and Agnes Boyle in Las Vegas, N.M. At the age of 7 she moved to Fort Scott, Kan., where she was raised by her grandparents, Charlie and Minnie Phelps. She graduated from Fort Scott High School and would spend the rest of her life in the Fort Scott area. Her first job was at Ben Franklin where she was introduced by a co-worker to the man she would later marry. She also worked as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell, clerk at Davison's Shoes, and as a dental assistant for Dr. Bill Payne until her retirement. She also was known throughout Fort Scott for several years as the 'Avon Lady'. On June 14, 1953, she married Hubert Leonard at the First Baptist Church in Fort Scott. To this union was born a daughter, Marilyn Kay. In 1972 they moved to a farm just outside of Fort Scott where they raised hay and cattle.

Mildred enjoyed cooking, sewing, and being around her family. She was an artist with a sewing machine and enjoyed sharing her work with family and friends. Many of her grandsons' outfits, coats, and Halloween costumes were sewn together by Mildred. She also taught others the art of sewing. Her grandsons were her pride and joy, and she followed their activities from the time they were young. Along with Hubert, she attended many plays, pageants, and ball games.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Bubs Hohulin of Lamar, Mo.,; grandsons Bill Hohulin of Rolla, Mo., and Steven Hohulin of Springfield, Mo.,; sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Eugene Winter of Fort Scott, brother and sister-in-law Harold and Martha Boyle of Fort Sumner, N.M., as well as a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, three brothers; William Boyle, Robert Boyle, and Jimmy Boyle, all of N.M., and her beloved husband of 59 years, Hubert Leonard.

Rev. Mike Armstrong will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with burial following at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Fort Scott. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
