Tigers splits doubleheader with Wellsville

Fort Scott split a double-header with Wellsville Tuesday. The host American Legion Post 25 team dropped a 10-3 first game as the visitors exploded for a seven-run sixth that proved the difference.

But it was a different story in the second game as Fort Scott had its own big inning, with a five-run second, en route to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.

Fort Scott actually led in the opener. After two scoreless innings, the Tigers broke through with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth.

But Wellsville made it a game with two runs of its own in the fifth, then had the explosive sixth, adding an insurance run in the seventh.

Mason Knopp threw five innings, facing 29 batters, giving up seven runs on seven hits, with five walks and five strikeouts.

Ryan Pichert came on for the home team, going an inning, facing two batters and giving up two runs on two hits and a walk.

Carter Young finished up on the mound, for the final inning, giving up one run, facing five batters and giving up one run on two hits and a walk.

Leading the offense for Fort Scott were Mason Knopp, who was 2 for 4 with an RBI; Chase Brown, who was 1-4 with an RBI; Kaleb DeLaTorre, who finished up 1-4 with a double; and Carter Young, who hit safely in three at bats, with a double.

Additionally, Jacob Payne, Benjamin Labbe, and Jake Bradbury each had hits.

In the second game, Wellsville took an early lead with a run in the first before the hosts took control in the second.

Ryan Pickert went the distance, going five innings. He gave up the one run, on three hits, fanning three, and issuing a lone walk.

Alex Fink was 1-2 with a double and an RBI and Carter Young was 1-2 with an RBI.

Jake Bradbury, Mason Knopp, Zach Denton, and Jacob Payne all had a hit.
