Seward County eliminates 'Hounds
WICHITA -- Fort Scott Community College's stay in the Region VI Tournament finals lasted just two games as the Greyhounds were knocked out of the double-elimination tournament by Jayhawk Conference-Western Division champion Seward County here Saturday, 8-5.
Seward County scored 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie. The Saints' rally began with 2 outs but with the bases loaded. Deven Nelson's single through the left side of the infield scored Johnny Griffith with what proved to be the winning run. Troy Owen followed with another hit to score Francisco Bolanos. Finally, Mason Marshall drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Bryson Allen.
Fort Scott went down 1-2-3 in the ninth against Adam Guay (5-1) and saw its season come to an end with a 40-17 record.
Seward (34-28 going into Monday's play) went on to knock No. 2-ranked Cowley (45-11) out of the tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers lost to Coffeyville in Saturday's last game, 4-0, to fall into the losers' bracket.
Aaron Mason, who came into the tournament with an 11-0 record, only made it through 5 innings for the Greyhounds, allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out 4.
Seward scored the game's first run. But Fort Scott took the lead with 4 in the top of the third. Doug Jenkins walked to lead off the inning. Joe Hermsen got on with a bunt and John Morey reached on an error. Jenkins scored on a wild pitch to tie the score, 1-1. Alex Copeland doubled with 1 out to bring home Morey and Hermsen. Copeland scored later in the inning on a groundout.
Fort Scott's other run scored in the fourth when Morey's ground-rule double plated Jenkins.
No Greyhound had more than one hit in the game -- Copeland, Morey, Lance Barkley, Reyn Sugai and Ka'ai Tom. Allen and Jacob Filler each had 3 hits for Seward County.
In other games Saturday, Colby defeated Garden City, 6-4, to eliminate the Broncbusters, and Neosho County shut out Kansas City to send the Blue Devils into the losers' bracket.
Sunday's play began with KCK eliminating Colby, 5-4, in 10 innings followed by Seward's elimination of Cowley. Neosho County defeated Coffeyville in the winner's bracket final, 2-1, and Seward beat Kansas City in 11 innings, 7-6, to end the Blue Devils' season.
Two games were scheduled for Monday. First, Coffeyville (31-24) faced Seward County in the losers' bracket final at 4 p.m. The winner of that game played Neosho County (34-24), the sixth-place finisher in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division in the regular season, for the championship at 7 p.m.
If needed, another championship game will be played at 7 p.m. tonight. The tournament champion goes on to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
