Friday, May 10, 2013

Fort Scott High School baseball and softball, originally scheduled for Thursday at Chanute, will try to get their final games of the regular season in today.

Both programs' varsity and junior varsity teams were both set to play doubleheaders. Today's schedule for both sports will have a single JV game at 3 p.m. with varsity doubleheaders to follow.

The outcome of the varsity baseball doubleheader will determine the league champion. Fort Scott is in front with a 7-1 record (11-4 overall) while Chanute is 7-3, 8-8. The Tigers win the title with at least a split. The Blue Comets can win the crown with sweep, which will give then two more league victories.

Fort Scott's softball doubleheader will also determine the league champion. The Tigers are undefeated in league play at 8-0, with an overall record of 13-3. Chanute is tied for second place with Independence at 8-2. Chanute is 10-6 overall while Indy is 12-3. Fort Scott and Independence were rained out on Wednesday and unable to reschedule their doubleheader.

The Tigers will secure the league title with at least a split. But if Chanute sweeps, it will claim the title having two more wins than Fort Scott and Independence.
