Tigers get by in opener; Girard routs in 2nd game
The first game of Tuesday's make-up softball doubleheader between Fort Scott High and Girard was perhaps what most people expected to be: A hard-fought battle between maybe the two best teams in southeast Kansas.
The second game was anything but. After the Tigers won the opener at Don Hewett Field, 8-7, the Trojans completely controlled game two and won 17-0 in just 4 innings to come away with a split.
Girard (12-2) has had a good week so far. On Monday, the Trojans took a CNC League doubleheader from Southeast 14-6 and 15-0.
Fort Scott (11-3) has lost three of its last four, with two losses coming by run rule. However, Paola, which swept the Tigers Thursday, has shown itself to be one of the best teams in the state for the past four seasons and is still undefeated (14-0).
Fort Scott scored in every inning of the opener. The Tigers held a 2-1 lead after one inning. Both runs came in on Delane Gray's single to left, which brought in Hannah Tourtillott and Maddi Allen.
Fort Scott made it 3-1 in the second. Sidney Maycumber doubled to lead off the inning. Tourtillott grounded to the pitcher, but she tried to fake Maycumber out, which didn't work. Riley Brown singled to bring Maycumber in.
Girard scored 4 runs in the top of the third on 5 hits to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers got one of those back in the bottom half. Gray led off with a base hit and stole second. She scored on Sidney Maycumber's single through the hole at shortstop.
Girard made it 6-4 after its turn in the top of the fifth. Fort Scott tied it in the bottom half of that frame. Brown flared a double just into the outfield down the first-base line and Hannah Geneva followed up with an RBI double to left. Kyenne Wade brought Geneva home with 2 out on a single up the middle.
Tourtillott manufactured a run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead. She reached on a bunt single, stole second, then scored when the catcher's throw was bad on her steal of third.
Carly Heatherly's single in the top of the sixth scored Hope McLeod to tie the score at 7-7 with nobody out. But Geneva (7-1) got a pop-up, a strikeout and a ground out to get out of trouble.
Brown doubled to left to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Geneva singled to left to provide what held up as the winning run.
Jenna Schroeder reached on a 1-out error in the top of the seventh for the Trojans. But after a Kelci Murphy sacrifice bunt, Schroeder was stranded there as Geneva induced a ground out to Gorman at second to end the game.
Brown was 3 for 4 at the plate for the Tigers while Tourtillott, Geneva, Gray, Wade, and Sidney Maycumber each went 2 for 4.
Geneva allowed 11 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7. McLeod was 3 for 4 to lead Girard at the plate. Heatherly and Madison Smith had 2 hits each.
Girard needed only 9 hits in the nightcap as the Trojans took advantage of 7 Fort Scott errors. They scored in each of the four innings played, going out to a 4-0 lead after one.
Alissa Schroeder got her second win in as many days, allowing only 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 for Girard. Wade, Allen and Sidney Maycumber had the hits for the Tigers.
McLeod, Smith and Jenna Schroeder had 2 hits each for Girard.
The Tigers will play a make-up Southeast Kansas League doubleheader this afternoon at Labette County. The first game begins at the unusual time of 3 p.m. Friday, weather permitting, they'll play a league make-up twinbill at Independence beginning at 4:30.
