IOLA -- Uniontown High School's golfers played in two tournaments in one day at the same golf course here Thursday,

Marmaton Valley hosted its junior varsity invitational in the late morning at Cedarbrook Golf Course, then held its varsity invitational beginning in the early afternoon.

The Eagles didn't have complete teams for either tournament and therefore did not place. The JV tournament was nine holes and the varsity tourney 18.

Jonathon Wheeler finished third in the JV tourney for Uniontown, shooting a personal-best score of 48. Dalton Clifton finished with a 62 and Jay Hierholzer came in with a 66.

"(Wheeler) has been hitting the ball a lot better the past week and it showed today," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. "Iola's course was challenging for these kids having never seen it and with so many trees."

Frontenac had the team and individual champs. The Raiders shot 194 as a team while Jayhawk-Linn was second at 206. John Brooks shot 45 to lead all golfers with Frontenac teammate Christian Crawford second with a 47.

In the varsity meet, Nick Reynolds shot a personal-best 106 for the Eagles while Austin Jefferis finished with a 108.

" The kids did a great job of hanging in there," Tourtillott said. "Both Nick and Austin struggled on the front nine and improved on the back. I would imagine seeing the course for the first time and knowing how it plays helped them score better on the back as well as better ball striking. Both of these guys are first-year golfers and keep improving week to week."

As was the case in the JV meet, the same school took the team and individual titles. This time, it was Jayhawk-Linn with a team score of 359. Chetopa was a distant second at 390.

Reece Dawson won the individual crown at 82 followed by Robbe Sellman of Humboldt with an 84.

The Eagles, weather permitting, will play in the Pomona-West Franklin tournament Monday.
