UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's softball team opened Monday night by scoring 38 runs in a triangular sweep over Northeast and Altoona-Midway in Three Rivers League play at George Warren Field.

Uniontown defeated Northeast 18-0 in five innings and Altoona-Midway 20-0 in three.

This was originally scheduled as a doubleheader with Northeast at Arma but field conditions didn't allow play there. Altoona, which was not on Uniontown's original season schedule, was added in.

The Eagles scored 14 runs in the final two innings against Northeast. Pitcher Taylor Wade struck out 4 Vikings.

Brit Stokes, Jamie Dawson, Mandie Ridge and Emily Shinn each had 3 hits for the Eagles. Lakyn Coyan had 2 hits.

"The cold weather was a factor as the wind was gusty and very cold," Uniontown head coach Paula Coyan said. "The girls played well despite the conditions. They played well for (having) minimal outdoor practice due to the snowy weather. We were very aggressive on the basepaths and put pressure on Arma's defense the whole night."

The Eagles scored 7 runs in the first inning against Midway and 13 in the second. Wade struck out 6 batters while the Jets' pitcher struggled greatly.

"Altoona's pitcher struggled with the cold and had control issues throughout the game," Coyan said. "We capitalized with many bases on balls and advanced around the bases on errors."

That means the Eagles didn't have very many hits. Coyan, Haley Felt and Amber Bartlett each scored 3 runs. Stokes, Shinn, Wade and Torrie Hathaway each scored twice.

"Defensively, we played a very strong game," Coyan added. "We didn't allow a runner to advance past first base. We had an excellent double play, with Stokes and Coyan, in the second inning to stop the only offensive threat from Altoona."

The Eagles will play a Three Rivers League doubleheader against Oswego Monday at George Warren Field.
