Tiger baseball wins season opener
CHANUTE -- Fort Scott High School's baseball team defeated Girard in its season opener here Thursday evening by a score of 9-5. The second game was suspended in the fourth inning due to darkness.
The games were moved to Neosho County Community College's Hudson Field after Girard's home field was too wet to play on. While Hudson Field does have FieldTurf on the infield, it doesn't have lights. The Tigers were leading the second game 8-5 in the middle of the fourth inning when it was suspended. It is not known if it will be resumed and completed.
Chase Brown was credited with 2 hits and 2 runs batted in in the opener. Jacob Payne and Benjamin Labbe also had 2 hits each. Jake Durossette, Wyatt Reehl, Mason Knopp and Carter Young each had 1 hit.
Young drive in 2 runs while Payne and Zach Denton each drove in 1. Labbe scored twice.
Ryan Pickert allowed 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4 in a complete-game effort on the mound.
The Tigers will play their first home games when Louisburg comes down for a non-league doubleheader at Ty Cullor Field at 4:30 Tuesday. The games will be played there as Fort Scott Community College is playing a Jayhawk Conference make-up doubleheader with Cowley at Lions Field at 1 p.m. that day.
