David Leon Cummings
David Leon Cummings, age 67, a former resident of Ft. Scott, Kan., and more recently of Kansas City, Kan., died March 12, 2013 at home following a lengthy illness. David was born on Aug. 25, 1945, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Booker T. Cummings and Cleo Mae Jenkins Cummings. He accepted Christ at a young age and was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He was a graduate of Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Community College. While at Fort Scott Community College in 1962, he was named All-SEC for the defensive team in football. He received his Bachelors degree from Kansas State College in Pittsburg, Kan. David was a veteran of the US Army serving in Vietnam. He worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad and retired from the US Postal Service Stations E, James Crews, and Westport after 32 years of service.
David loved his dogs, especially Okie. He enjoyed gospel music, green plants, long baths and in his earlier years coaching his son Malcolm's various sports teams. He also loved to engage in "good conversation" and had a passion for helping others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Louwellyn Kono Cummings; a brother Gardner Cummings and a sister Maxine Cummings Gordon.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving and dedicated wife, Lily Ah Sau Cummings; his daughter, LaCretia Lynn Grant, Oklahoma City, Okla.; his son, Malcolm Leon Cummings (Jamie) Kansas City, Kan.; a grandson Malcolm, and two granddaughters Alexandria and Amiyah. Also surviving are a sister, Laverne Person, Olathe, Kan.; four brothers Charles Cumming (Alta) Fort Scott, Kan.; Albert Cummings, St. Louis, Mo., Jerry Cummings, Sacramento, Calif. and Phillip Cumming (Mary Ann) Oklahoma City, Okla. and a host of nieces, nephews, "adopted sons" Alex Hamm, Brandon Hughes, Langston Parker, Lou Green and special longtime friend Mina Harris.
Elder Arthur Greene assisted by Rev. George Proctor will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m.. Friday, March 15 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan. where military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
