Fort Scott Community College's men bounced back from a drubbing at the hands of Allen -- the last-place team in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division on Saturday -- to take an 81-77 overtime decision over Hesston at Arnold Arena Monday night in a game that goes toward post-season seeding in Region VI-Division II post-season play.

When James Fleming -- who had a personal-best 27-point night -- gave Fort Scott the first basket of overtime, the 'Hounds seemed to realize that there wasn't any real need to get into a frenzy. Hesston had to catch up and the Larks failed to do so as FSCC held them without a field goal in the extra session,

"We laughed about that after," Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said. "We've been in enough overtime games and we know what we're doing. We're built for this. They executed perfectly in overtime."

Hesston (3-5 in Division II, 18-8 overall) went 0 for 6 from the field in the extra session and didn't score in the final two minutes.

Ray Ray Chase -- who had 21 rebounds -- made it 78-75 on a layup with three minutes to go in the extra session. Pierre Zook made two free throws with 2:04 to go to bring Hesston within one point. Fleming made one of two free throws with 1:19 left, then drove in for a layup with :33 seconds left.

Hesston's Mahlon Jones, who was red hot most of the second half on his way to a 24-point night, drove in for a layup. But Chase blocked it and the Greyhounds got the rebound.

Fleming made 11 of 22 shots from the field for the 'Hounds (5-7 East, 2-4 D-II, 11-13 overall), including 3 of 6 three-point shots, making up for the slumping Austin Danner, who was just 1 of 9 following a 2-for-13 performance Saturday in Fort Scott's 86-66 loss to Allen, which was the Red Devils' first conference win of the season (1-11, 5-19).

Fort Scott made 7 of its first 8 shots from the field in going out to an 18-4 lead with 14:27 left in the first half. Fleming scored 11 points in that run. Hesston, meanwhile, missed 9 of its first 10 shots.

Things turned around at about the 13-minute mark as the shooting touch went over to the Larks. Beau Palmer's transition basket with five minutes left brought Hesston within 29-27.

Fort Scott's lead was 44-40 at the half. Jones scored the first basket of the half to cut the deficit to 2 points before the 'Hounds scored the next 6.

Jones was the only player able to hit a basket for Hesston in the first 10 minutes of the half. He couldn't miss, making his first 7 shots of the half, while his teammates couldn't hit, going a combined 0 for 10 to start the half.

Once Jones' teammates finally got going, the Larks were able to trim a 60-50 deficit down to one point with a 9-0 run.

C.J. Hall's tip-in got the 'Hounds going again briefly as they scored 6 of 8 to go up 65-61 with 7:48 to go.

Hesston scored the next 8 with Jones' 3-pointer from the right wing giving the Larks a 69-65 lead with 5:37 to go.

Fort Scott scored the next 5 to reclaim the lead with 3:37 to go. Zook hit a triple to put Hesston ahead, 72-70, again with 2;24 to go.

Fleming got the kind bounce on a jumper with 1;56 left to tie the score again. Zook put Hesston back in front with a layup with 1:40 left.

Kevin House made two free throws for Fort Scott with 1:34 to go in regulation, to tie the score at 74.

Hesston had the ball wit 37 seconds left and decided that Jones would have the chance to win the game. But he had trouble controlling the ball -- fans wanted a double dribble call -- and got off a poor shot as the shot clock expired. The 'Hounds got the rebound with 8/10ths of a second left.

Prince Samuels added 15 points for the Greyhounds, 12 of those in the first half, and grabbed 11 rebounds. Cook said that Samuels was the one who carried the 'Hounds in the first half. Chase added 11 points.

Zook finished with 18 points for Hesston while William Barmes added 12.

Fort Scott shot 40 percent from the field, making 30 of 74 field-goal attempts, while outrebounding Hesston, 59-30. The Larks shot 43 percent on 29 of 67.

Saturday: Allen 86, Fort Scott 66.

Allen broke a 13-game losing streak while scoring more than 70 points for the first time since December 8 against Hesston.

Cameron Blue led the Red Devils with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Seth Walden, a hometown Iolan, and Rocky Roberts added 13 points each and Andrew Rountree chipped in with 10.

Fleming scored 19 points for the Greyhounds while Samuels finished with 17.

Allen shot 53 percent from the field, making 28 of 53 field-goal attempts. Fort Scott managed just 35 percent on 26 of 74.

Allen won the battle of the boards, 44-42. Fleming led Fort Scott with 9 rebounds.

The Devils led 39-24 at halftime.

The Greyhounds will step back into conference play Wednesday night as they host Labette at 7:30 p.m. It will be the Greyhounds' fourth game in eight days. Third-place Labette (8-3, 14-10) didn't play Monday night. The Cardinals lost to Independence, 82-81, Saturday night.
