Hesston women rally past Greyhounds late, 56-52

The last two games have had a similarity for Fort Scott Community College's women.
Saturday at Iola, the Greyhounds played tough against Allen and held a brief lead in the second half. But Allen quickly reclaimed the lead and went on to a 68-52 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.
Monday at Arnold Arena, Fort Scott held a larger lead later in the half. But Hesston overcame that 10-point deficit to prevail, 56-52, in a game that goes toward seeding in Region VI Division II post-season play.
Fort Scott's women have won just one of their last 21 games, a run that began with roster changes in late November. The Greyhounds (1-6 in D-II games, 0-12 in the East and 4-20 overall) were only able to dress five players in their two games last week -- at Neosho County Wednesday night and at Allen -- as semester recruit Kayla Stewart has class commitments that come first since she wasn't originally recruited to play basketball and starting forward Burgandie Lewis missed those games due to a family issue.
But even with all seven players dressed Monday night, the Greyhounds tired out as they were playing for the third time in six days.
Saturday at Allen, the host Red Devils (6-6 East, 13-11 overall) led by just 2 points at the half. Fort Scott's Malori Gales hit a 3-point shot that gave the 'Hounds their brief lead 21 seconds into the half.
Ten seconds after that, DaNara Day drove down the middle of the lane for Allen to set off a 21-3 surge over a six-minute stretch.
Gales finished with 22 points for the Greyhounds, making 5 of 10 three-point shots. Lee added 15 points. Fort Scott shot 33 percent from the floor, making 19 of 56 field-goal attempts.
Day finished with 22 points for Allen, which shot 43 percent on 28 of 65 and outrebounded Fort Scott, 46-35.
Monday night, Fort Scott jumped out to a 9-2 lead after six minutes of play. Lewis was back, scoring first when she stuck back her own missed shot.
But then Hesston (3-5 D-II, 12-14 overall) got hot and claimed the lead with 9:55 to go at the end of a 14-3 run capped by Rachel Miller's 3-point goal.
Fort Scott then took over again with a 11-2 run putting the 'Hounds ahead, 25-22, with 4:22 to go on Rebecca Fisher's triple from the left side.
Hesston clamped down, holding Fort Scott to 2 points -- on 2 field-goal attempts -- in the final four minutes of the half. Kelli Christenson's turn around jumper in the paint with two seconds to go put the Larks ahead, 29-27.
The Greyhounds fought back at the start of the second half behind their post tandem of Lee and Lewis, who combined to score each of Fort Scott's first 11 points. Lee's layup with 17:30 to go sparked a 14-0 run with Lewis' layup a minute later tying the score at 33-33 and Lee's layup giving them the lead.
Fisher hit a 3-point shot and Lewis took a pass from Lewis on a cutter through the lane for a layup that pushed the lead to 43-33 with 12:21 left.
Hesston scored the next 9 to get within one. Fort Scott was not able to get a field goal but managed to hang on with sone free throws and was up 47-44 with 4;45 left.
Hesston scored 8 straight, the last 4 by MaKayla Ladwig to go up 52-47 with 2:46 left.
Erica McKenzie brought Fort Scott within a pair one last time on a layup with 1:38 to go that brought the 'Hounds within 52-50. Nikkia Lester and Destavia Davis scored for Hesston to wrap things up.
Lee had 15 points and 13 rebounds for Fort Scott while Lewis finished with 14 points and 12 boards.
