Indy runs thwart women's rally

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Fort Scott Community College's women were back within 7 points with 3:28 left in Wednesday night's Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division contest with Independence, having rallied after the Pirates began the second half of play with a 13-0 run.

But Independence killed all hopes of a comeback by outscoring Fort Scott 9-1 the rest of the way to take a 56-41 victory.

The Greyhounds (0-9 East, 4-16 overall) had a week off following their upset win over Brown Mackie last Wednesday but fell for the 13th consecutive time in division play going back to last season.

Indy's half-opening run put it ahead 40-20 with 14:28 to go in the game. Burgandie Lewis and D'Shawna Lee scored back-to-back for the 'Hounds as they began to climb back.

Indy wouldn't score on consecutive possessions again for 12 minutes. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds scored 8 straight points to get within 47-40 with 3 1/2 minutes to go.

U'knique (pronounced "Unique") Gaines scored with exactly three minutes left for the Pirates (6-3, 10-10). Lee made one of two free throws with 2:43 remaining. It turned out to be the Greyhounds' last score of the night. Indy scored the last 7 points.

Lee scored 15 points for the Greyhounds and also had 5 steals. Malori Gales added 11 points for Fort Scott while Lewis led in rebounding with 9. The 'Hounds shot 29 percent from the field, making 12 of 41 field-goal attempts.

Sabrina Berry led Independence with 21 points, scoring the first 11 of the second-half run and finishing 10 of 15 from the field. No other Pirate had more than 7 points.

Independence made 40 percent of its field-goal tries on 25 of 63.

Fort Scott concludes its five-game homestand with a conference game against Coffeyville at 2 p.m. Saturday at Arnold Arena.
