FSCC women drop conference pair

Fort Scott Community College's short-handed women's basketball team dropped its 13th and 14th consecutive games in the past three days, both ar Arnold Arena.

Saturday, the Greyhounds fell to Kansas City Kansas, 63-53, in a game that counted both in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and in Region VI Division II post-season seeding. The Blue Devils broke a nine-game losing streak of their own and followed it up with a 46-44 win over Neosho County on Monday.

Fort Scott fell to Cowley in conference play only, 65-34, Monday night and now stands at 0-5 in the Region, 0-8 in the East and 3-15 overall.

KCK (1-5, 2-4, 6-11) used a 16-5 run to take control in the first half on Saturday, hitting four 3-point goals in that stretch to go up 27-12 with 3:11 left in the half.

The Greyhounds rallied in the second half with a 7-0 run to get within 49-46 with 5:48 to go on Malori Gales' 3-point goal. But the Blue Devils scored 7 of the next 9 to take control with three minutes to go.

Burgandie Lewis had a double-double for the 'Hounds, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Erika McKenzie scored 13 points and D'Shawna Lee finished with 12 points.

Samantha Hurst led KCK with 15 points as she made 4 of 7 3-point shots. Bailey West had a double-double of her own with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Fort Scott shot better than KCK, 39 percent on 18 of 46 compared to 31 percent on 20 of 64. But the Devils went 11 for 24 behind the 3-point line and 12 of 17 at the free-throw line. Fort Scott was 15 of 23 at the charity stripe but only 2 of 12 from 3-point range.

Monday: Cowley 65, Fort Scott 34.

The Tigers (5-1 East, 5-3 overall) took control midway through the second half as they outscored the Greyhounds 11-2 in the final 9:10 despite the fact that they didn't score a field goal in the final 6:41.

The slump didn't carry over into the second half for Cowley as it opened the second half by making 6 of its first 7 shots from the field and extended the lead to 43-16 with 15:52 to go on back-to-back triples by Emilie Gronas.

The Tigers made 9 of 20 3-pointers in the game and 23 of 60 field-goal attempts overall (38 percent). Gronas, who was 4 of 7 from behind the arc, led the Tigers with 12 points and Yvonna Dunkey, who was 3 of 5 from triple territory, added 11 points.

Lewis scored 13 points and hauled down 8 rebounds for the Greyhounds, making 6 of 9 field-goal tries. But only four of the six who played in the game scored and no one else had double figures.

Fort Scott finished the night 15 of 43 from the field for 35 percent. The 'Hounds made only 2 of 11 3-point shots and 2 of 10 free throws.

KCK outrebounded Fort Scott, 46-24.

The Greyhounds will look to break their losing streak with the third of five consecutive home games Wednesday night. Brown Mackie comes to Arnold Arena for a Division II seeding game.
