To the Editor:
I heard some news today that terrified me. I found out that our General Transportation Bus here in Fort Scott is in very real danger of closing by spring of next year.
Why was I terrified? Because that is the only way I have to go anywhere in town. I am disabled now and no longer drive. No close friends or family anymore that can take me to the grocery store/doctor/post office or anywhere in town.
In short: My very life depends on that bus running.
I have been on the phone all morning trying to find out what can be done to keep it running. So far I found out: our city has nothing to do with the bus, even though its operation and our using it greatly benefits the town and its businesses.
That the county runs it but so far I have not been able to contact anyone from there so we can figure out a way to save our bus.
What I do know: It's all because of budget cuts.
OK, folks here is the way to balance your budget (Congress I sure hope some of you read this).
Budget from the bottom up, not the other way around. The folks on the lower end of the financial scale are the ones who need things. They are the ones who buy stuff when they can. So money trickles up, not down.
Budget for necessary things first: food, water you know, the stuff you will die without. That includes the bus. Because if I can't get out to buy food and go to the doctor I will die. That is a cold hard fact. So, I guess myself and others like me, because believe me there are more out there, should just die and to quote Scrooge: decrease the surplus population??????
There has to be an answer to this problem. Help the people who rely on the bus in Fort Scott. Find it. PLEASE!!!!
