Short-handed Fort Scott boys fall to Nado
FORT SCOTT -- Fort Scott's top two scorers this season, Johnathan Stark and Garin Sinn, woke up Friday morning with cases of the flu so bad that there was no way they could play Friday night when Coffeyville visited the FSHS gymnasium.
Playing the Golden Tornado is a tough enough task when a team is at full strength. And Coffeyville wasn't much interested in showing mercy, going out to a 20-0 lead on its way to a 59-46 victory in Southeast Kansas League play.
But much like last week, when the Tigers responded to a 27-1 first-quarter deficit by gutting things out and getting within 9 points in the fourth quarter, Fort Scott showed tenacity once again, getting within 9 late in the contest.
"It's part of the deal," Fort Scott head coach Jeff DeLaTorre said. "It happens every year. We want to make sure they're healthy; that's the bottom line. There's a lot more things important than this game and their health is one of them."
Mason Knopp, inserted into the starting lineup, scored Fort Scott's first 5 points, which happened to come in the last 1:44 of the first quarter. A 3-point shot from the left side and a stickback of a teammate's miss kept the Tigers (0-2 SEK, 0-5 overall) from being shut out in the period.
Kaleb DeLaTorre, also put into the starting lineup, hit a 3-point shot to start the second quarter to cap what ended up being an 8-0 run.
Fort Scott chipped the deficit down to 27-13 with 1:28 remaining on a layup by Jack Olin. Devin Knight, Coffeyville's 6' 5" post, took a steal in for a layup at the buzzer.
The Golden Tornado (2-0, 4-1) got the lead up to 20 points, 46-26, after three periods. Fort Scott started the fourth with 6 straight points. Jash Pytlowany scored a basket and Olin made two free throws and a layup.
Another run clipped the deficit to 50-39 with 3:05 remaining. DeLaTorre scored a jumper. Knopp made 2 free throws, then DeLaTorre hit a 3-point shot.
Alex Fink, who led the Tigers with 10 points and 11 rebounds, made back-to-back shots to get the Tigers within 54-45 with about a minute and a half to go.
"I'm proud of how we battled," DeLaTorre said. "There's things we obviously need to work on. But with the situation tonight, down two guys and throwing young guys out there, we handled ourselves pretty well."
James Newton led Coffeyville with 15 points, Darren Lewis added 14 and James Jones finished with 13.
Fort Scott shot 35 percent for the game overall, making 16 of 49 field-goal attempts but went 12 for 27 in the second half. Coffeyville shot 46 percent on 26 of 57.
Fort Scott outrebounded Coffeyville 43-30.
Oling scored 13 points in the junior varsity game, which Fort Scott won 46-38.
The Tigers play Tuesday night at Parsons in another SEK battle. That will be their last game of pre-holiday play.
