Tigers take second in home tourney

Fort Scott High School's wrestling team finished second in its annual home dual tournament Saturday at the FSHS gymnasium. The Tigers won four of five duals despite filling only nine of the 14 weight classes.
"That itself is something I'll have to sit down and study," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said of the Tigers' feat. "It's not very often you'll have so few contestants and be able to amass victories in a dual. When you give up that many touchdowns (forfeits, which score 6 points to the opponent), it's a challenge.
"What worked in our favor in a couple of duals is that the other team also had opens. The nine we put on the mat came to wrestle very well."

Although there aren't individual titles in a dual tournament, five Tigers finished undefeated on the day. Some of them received forfeits but Victor Hughes recorded three pins in four matches at 138 pounds and another one at 145. John Hughes also picked up five wins on the mat at 160, pinning two opponents. Tyler Sharp (120) won one by forfeit but pinned two of the four opponents he faced. He now has 97 high-school victories and should be able to get to No. 100 this weekend at Eudora. Cole Stewart (113) and John Metcalf (195) each received three forfeits. Stewart pinned both opponents he faced on the mat and Metcalf had one pin and one decision.
Each Tiger wrestled at least two matches, so all came away with at least the amount of work one gets during a weeknight triangular.
Jerad Heckman (132/138) wrestled four times and finished 4-1 with four pins. Freshman Phillip Moran (103) was 4-1 with two pins. B.J. Wilson was 3-0 at 220 pounds with two pins and 3-1 overall. Brendan Blackburn was 3-1 at 285. Hayes Howser wrestled twice at 220 and was 1-1 with a pin.

That no Tiger had a losing record was also a key in Fort Scott's success. Blue Valley Southwest won the tournament title, going 5-0. The Tigers won five of the eight matches that were held against the Timberwolves and received a forfeit at 113. That gave Fort Scott 26 team points. But the five forfeits they had to give up gave Southwest 30 points as the T-Wolves won the dual, 47-26.
Second to Southwest, even if Fort Scott had been able to fill more slots, is nothing to be crestfallen over. The Class 5A team is expected to be one of the top in the Kansas City area.
"We feel we performed top end today," Brown said. "And in a lot of cases, exceeded some expectations. Southwest, that was going to be a dogfight to even keep close with only nine wrestlers and, basically, their full lineup. If we fill our lineup, it's still going to be a tough battle.
"We went in with the attitude that we were going to give it our best shot to win."
Fort Scott opened the morning with a 49-24 win over Louisburg. The Tigers won every match held, five by pin. Both teams were open at 152 pounds and the Wildcats' only wins came from the forfeits they received.
Moran started that dual by pinning Adam Harris with 26 seconds remaining in the second period to pick up his first high-school victory in his initial match.
Next came a 43-30 win over Paola. Both teams were open at 126 and the Panthers only won one match on the mat, the 285-pound bout. V.Hughes picked up the 100th victory of his high-school career in that dual, shutting out Connor Patton, 5-0.
The Tigers took care of Anderson County in the third round, 51-24, again only giving up points on forfeits. Both teams were open at 152 and Fort Scott recorded pins in eight of their nine wins. John Metcalf's pin of Tim Cornett at 195 was his 90th high-school victory. Blackburn needed only 22 seconds to stick Allen Young at 285.
Blue Valley Southwest won its first round dual over Shawnee Mission West, 48-21. The Wolves took the second-round from Louisburg, 51-21. And they dominated Paola, 41-22, in the third round to set up a fourth-round match of unbeaten teams.
Southwest gained the early edge as Marty Varhaeghe pinned Moran. Stewart took a forfeit and Sharp won a 6-1 decision over Adam Pelfry to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead.
Nathan Wood received a forfeit at 126 and Saywer Like defeated Heckman by technical fall at 132 to put the Wolves ahead, 17-12.
V. Hughes pinned Devin Tate with just under a minute remaining at 138 to bring the Tigers within two in the team score. But being open at four of the next five weights saw the Wolves clinch the bout, ahead 41-20.
Although John Hughes gave Fort Scott 5 points with his technical fall over Dylan O'Dell at 160, the Tigers' maximum possible score was 39 points. Metcalf defeated T.J. Martin, 5-2, at 195. Blackburn took a 3-2 overtime decision over Kyle Pepper with an escape with 18 seconds remaining in the extra session.
Southwest went on to beat Anderson County, 60-15, in the final round to complete its unbeaten run through the tournament. Fort Scott went on to a 45-18 win over Class 6A Shawnee Mission West. There were only five matches in that dual as the Vikings brought only seven wrestlers.
Fort Scott won four of the five matches. Heckman moved up to 138 and pinned Aaron Taylor. V.Hughes moved up to 145 and pinned Eska Ntakirutimana in 1 minute, 7 seconds. John Hughes scored a takedown with 5 seconds left in the 160-pound bout to take a 6-5 win over Swedi Ntakirutimana. And Howser quickly turned around an initial disadvantage to pin Lee Spight 1:02 into the 220 match.
Paola finished in third place while Anderson County was fourth, Louisburg fifth and Shawnee Mission West sixth.
The Tigers will be in the field at the Eudora Tournament this weekend. Friday's action begins at 1:30 with Saturday's session set to begin at 9 a.m.
