Greyhounds take East Central tourney
UNION, Mo. -- Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team went unbeaten at the East Central College Tournament here over the weekend, improving to 19-9 on the season going into Monday night's Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division match at Independence.
The Greyhounds swept Southwestern Illinois in their opener on Friday, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17. Haylee Toothman had 15 kills in the match while Ashley Bell came up with 11. Taylyn Schwartz handed out 38 assists. Kate Smith picked up 14 digs while Ali Cure had 12.
The 'Hounds needed five sets to take the second match over the host school, 26-24, 17-25, 27-25, 25-17, 18-16. Cure had 20 kills, Toothman 17 and Jacy Ermel 13. Schwartz dished out 58 assists. Toothman came up with 31 digs while Cure had 22, Smith 19, Sarah Williams 17 and Schwartz 15.
Saturday, the Greyhounds beat conference rival Neosho County in four, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18. Toothman led with 20 kills. Schwartz had 44 assists. Smith and Toothman each had 23 digs while Schwartz had 13 and Williams had 10.
In the final match, Fort Scott swept Wentworth Military Academy, 25-17, 25-6, 25-12. Toothman had 18 kills for the 'Hounds, Schwartz 42 assists, and Smith 14 digs.
Fort Scott plays Neosho County at Arnold Arena Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
