Lela Jean Denick Comstock

Lela Jean Denick Comstock, 86, of rural Deerfield, Mo., passed away at her home in the presence of her family on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012. Jean was born July 15, 1926, in Sedan, Kan., the daughter of Martin Luther Denick and Alma Lea Smith Denick. She was baptized May 11, 1934, at the First Christian Church of Sedan. Her membership was transferred to Clayton Christian Church, Eve, Mo., on Jan. 5, 1964.

She graduated from Sedan High School on May 17, 1945. Following graduation she worked in an aircraft/munitions plant near Oklahoma City, Okla. On Dec. 2, 1945, she married Charles Albert Comstock at her parents' home in Sedan, Kan. To this union were born four children, daughters Jo Lynn and Nancy Sue and sons, Charles Albert Jr. and Marty Alan. Charles and Jean worked side by side and raised their children on the family farm west of Deerfield. Jean also worked for many years as clerk for Public Water Supply District No. 7 and was active in the community, serving on the Coal Township Election Board and as a Democratic Committeewoman, 4-H club leader and Extension Club member. She enjoyed playing pitch and spent many hours completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She loved the outdoors, especially fall days spent in the pecan grove.

Jean is survived by her children, Jo Lynn Warnke and husband, David, of Stover, Mo., Nancy Sue Hanrahan and husband, Michael, of Cameron, Mo., Charles Albert Comstock Jr. and wife, Patrice, of Deerfield, Mo., and Marty Alan Comstock and wife, Molly, of Fayette, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Denick and wife, Martha, of Virginia; a sister, Audra Bauder of Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents, Martin Luther and Alma; her brothers, William and Forrest; and her sister, Ilet.

The Rev. Tim O'Neal will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sep. 16, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Deerfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1 p.m. until service time at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Deerfield Cemetery Association and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kan. 66701.
