Block Party slated on Saturday
The city of Fort Scott and the Youth Activities Team will host a block party from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
The event will celebrate community accomplishments this year, such as the opening of the new skatepark and aquatic center, the expansion at Buck Run Community Center and the replacement of lights at Fisher Park through the Take Charge Challenge.
None of these things would have been possible without the support of the entire community, officials said.
The block party will include free activities at the skatepark, swimming pool, Buck Run and Fisher Park, as well as a street dance hosted by The Keyhole. Activities will begin at 4 p.m. with a skate exhibition at the James B. Tedesco Memorial Skatepark. Water games will begin at 5 p.m. at the Fort Scott Aquatic Center along with open swim time. A racquetball tournament for middle and high school youth will be held in the new racquetball court at BRCC. This event also starts at 5 p.m. A basketball skills challenge for youngsters 5 years of age through high school will follow starting at 6 p.m.
A kickball tournament for middle and high school kids will be held on the Fisher Park fields starting at 8 p.m. Miniature golf and inflatables will be open for play for all ages from 5 p.m. through the end of the event in the aquatic center parking lot.
A free dinner of hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served from 7 to 8 p.m., also in the aquatic center parking lot. The street dance will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in front of The Keyhole building on Main Street across from Fort Scott High School.
Drawings will be held for prizes throughout the event. Registration for drawings and information on the night of the event will be in front of the aquatic center.
