Shields Memorial Scholarships awarded

Thursday, June 28, 2012

On June 5, 2012 an event was held in Mapleton, Kan., for The Shields Memorial Scholarship. Jean and Roy Shields were a big part of Mapleton and Mapleton arena, so this scholarship was set up in memory of them.

A mountain oyster and brisket feed was held to raise funds of $1,000. The award was made based on applications entered by kids wanting the scholarships. All who applied were considered winners.

It was decided to give four $250 scholarships. The Mapleton C store said that to help out they would add $200 to the pot making each scholarship $300. Thank you Joey Bisogno.

The scholarships were awarded to: Seth Sympson from Uniontown. He is planning to get an engineering degree from the University of Kentucky; Max Labbe from Uniontown. He is planning attending Kansas State with a major in chemical engineering; Seth Lee Bartlett from Uniontown. He is planning on initially attending Allen County Community College and then going on to Kansas State University to study veterinary medicine; and Joshua Tyler Beerbower from Uniontown, who is planning to attend Missouri Southern University for a degree in criminal justice.

Congratulations to all of the students. The scholarship committee consisted of Kyle Cummings, Sonya Cummings, Marla Sutterby, Kevin Sutterby and Dan Laughlin.

Thanks to all the people that made this possible and thanks to Nels Smith for getting this started.
