Quality and quantity found at the farmers' market

Thursday, May 24, 2012

This week's market minute focuses on the abundant goodness found at the Fort Scott farmers' market.

First, the produce: Vendor tables that are picture perfect with colorful produce. There is chedar (yellow) and perpale along with with snow white cauliflower, broccoli, big, beautiful dark red beets, yellow and zucchinni summer squashes, green onions, radishes, snow and snap peas, new potatoes, turnips, Swiss chard, herbs, large sweet onions, asparagus (Tuesday nights only), lettuces, cabbage and gooseberries. The quality and quantity is astounding.

Along side the tables of produce, vendors have eggs, jellies, baked goods and homemade crafts.

Secondly, the goodness of our community is apparent and abundant at the market. Requests for use of the "community tent" space is at the highest level of any market season.

The diversity of the individuals, groups and organizations utilizing the space is a clear indicator that our market is viewed as a bi-weekly community event. Already this year, we have hosted the Friends of the Fort, the Master Gardener's Club, SEK Health Department, Crosspower Agape Ministry, and the Woosley Sounds of America Tour.

Those winning donated items from the Woosley fundraiser were as follows: Royals tickets -- Joyce Davenport, golden willow tree -- Angie Bin, American flag -- Brenda Hill, gift card -- Betty Karns, planter -- Sean Staton. Thank you to all who participated in these fundraisers.

Saturday, May 26, will feature a most unique fundraiser. Miss Mady McColm, a sophmore at Fort Scott High School, will perform her award winning portayal of "Save the Children" depicting Florence Kelly's child labor reform struggle.

Mady's performance at the state level won her the opportunity to attend National History Day in College Park, Md., on June 11-13. Immediately upon the return from national competition, she will attend the Holy Leadership Conference in Manhattan, Kan.

Mady's accomplishments are numerous. She is in honor's classes, took fourth place in state forensics, won a novice award in prose with debate, is on the Hurricane swim team and participated in scholars bowl.

This talented young lady is going to represent our state, our county and our community on a national level. Please come out to her interactive performances this Saturday morning. Let's support the abundent goodness of our community.

Let the goodness of the market feed your body and soul.

See you at the market.
