Tigers beat No. 3 seed in opening round, lose to Iola in semis
OTTAWA -- Sixth-seeded Fort Scott High bounced third-seeded Paola, 5-4, in the first round of the Ottawa Class 4A Regional Baseball Tournament here Monday afternoon.
Paola (13-8) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and had the tying run on third with one out. Justin Uhler (4-3) brought things to an end by inducing a pop up for the second out and striking out the last batter of the game.
Uhler allowed 7 hits but didn't walk anyone and struck out 3.
Fort Scott scored 3 runs in the top of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie. Dane Cummings' 2-out double brought home Zach Denton and Jacob Durossette.
Denton had 2 hits for the Tigers. Uhler, Luke Brown and Benjamin Labbe also scored runs.
Fort Scott advanced to the semifinals, where it was to meet second-seeded Iola Tuesday afternoon. Iola advanced with a 6-1 win over Prairie View Monday.
Also Monday, top-seeded Ottawa blasted Anderson County, 13-0, and No. 4 Osawatomie routed Louisburg, 8-0, to set up Tuesday's other semifinal.
Fort Scott lost to Iola in the first of Tuesday's semifinal games, 9-1, and ends its season at 10-12. Details will be printed in a later edition. Ottawa (19-4) defeated Osa-watomie, 15-2, in the other semifinal and went on to beat Iola (17-6) in the championship game, 13-5.
