It's time to cue "Pomp and Circumstance" for area students as they grab their caps and gowns in preparation for the commencement season.

Students from area high schools and Fort Scott Community College will be attending their respective ceremonies throughout the rest of this week and into the next to celebrate the culmination of their education careers.

The Christian Learning Center kicked off the first of several area exercises, graduating two seniors on Tuesday evening, Joseph Fischer and Kensi Kitsmiller.

CLC Principal James Stark said the seniors are "great, young people" and he's excited about their "bright futures."

"I just appreciate their efforts and great character, their strong families and parents," Stark said, "especially their Christian homes."

The commencement, held in the CLC gymnasium, was a joint ceremony honoring both the graduating seniors, eighth-graders and pre-schoolers.

The next set of commencements, FSCC's nurse pinning ceremony, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday. Twenty-six students are set to graduate.

Myrtle Anne Colum was chosen as the 2012 Outstanding Alumna and will speak at the next graduation ceremony at 9 a.m. Friday at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center. About 69 students are eligible to receive their certificates and associate of applied science degrees at this ceremony.

Colum graduated from the college, where she studied liberal arts, in 1952. She now serves as vice chairperson for Board of Trustees and is also a board member of the Gordon Parks Foundation and a steering committee member of the Gordon Parks Celebration.

Micheal W. Hill II, the 2012 Outstanding Young Alumna and 1991 FSCC graduate, will address graduates at the noon ceremony. About 115 other students will receive associate of general studies, associate of applied science in nursing and associate of arts degrees during two other ceremonies held Friday afternoon.
