Altic returns, teams up with Daly for No. 1 doubles crown
PARSONS -- Senior Kyle Altic, who injured his knee during the Class 4A State Basketball Tournament in early March, returned to tennis action for the first time since last spring Tuesday and teamed up with Bryce Daly to win the No. 1 singles title at the Labette County Invitational here Tuesday.
Altic and Daly lost just three games the entire day, posting one shutout.
"It was good to get him back in the line up," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "He and Bryce were not really challenged today, but this gave them a chance to get some work together against someone other than their teammates. They will have to work out a few things, but they have the potential to be a very competitive team going into the end of the season."
Altic and Daly shut out LC's Conner Traxson/Caleb Webster, defeated Columbus' Blake MacKenson/Andre McLean, 8-1, and Independence's Skye Conley/Trevor Ferguson, 8-2.
The Tigers finished tied with LCHS in team standings, each one point behind Independence. The Grizzlies were awarded second since they won three of the four matches against Fort Scott.
Matt Hull won the No. 2 singles division. He beat Columbus' Mark Guinn, 8-2, and Independence's Austin Whitson, 8-3. He lost an 8-6 decision to Labette's Aidan Carter. He won a three-way tie-breaker on winning percentage.
Austin Sather was third in No. 1 singles. He lost to LC's Josh Mathes, 8-4, and Columbus' Cody Spainhoward, 8-6, before beating Indy's A.J. Capps.
Jesse Guerro and Jon Carpen1ter lost three 8-1 decisions in No. 2 doubles. The victors were LC's Dakota Lewis/Colton Kessler, Columbus' Ross Westervelt/Aaron Napier and Indy's Drake King/Brennan Gordon.
The Tigers return here Friday before hosting their own invitational Saturday morning.
