'Hound women set defensive mark
CHANUTE -- Based on Tribune record, Fort Scott Community College's women set a school record here Saturday night in beating Neosho County, 45-27, in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.
The 27 points is the fewest scored by any Greyhound opponent. The previous low was set in November of 1997 when Fort Scott allowed the Ottawa Junior Varsity only 35 points in a 21-point victory. The old record for games versus another junior college was set in February of 1998 when the Greyhounds beat Independence 77-37.
Jolee Sharp led the Greyhounds (1-5 East, 6-11 overall) with 12 points and 10 steals. Post Jataeva Arnold added 10 points for Fort Scott, which led 14-10 at halftime.
Autumn Zenon led Neosho County (2-4, 3-15) with 12 points. No other Panther had more than four points.
The 'Hounds forced 20 turnovers while committing only 11 themselves and held the Panthers to 25-percent field-goal shooting (10 of 40).
Fort Scott outrebounded Neosho, 38-25, with Burgandie Lewis hauling down a team-leading 9 boards.
There was almost another record set as the Greyhounds managed to post 5 more points than they did in February of 2001 against Johnson County. In that 40-38 win, Fort Scott scored the fewest points in a game that it won. Saturday's performance was the second fewest although the 'Hounds stepped up the offense in the second half, outscoring Neosho County 31-17.
Neosho County's men defeated Fort Scott 89-68. No details were available from that game.
Fort Scott's teams play at Coffeyville Wednesday night. The women tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8.
