FSCC debate, forensics team does well
On the opening weekend for Fort Scott Community College's debate and forensics squad, the Greyhounds traveled to Hutchinson to compete at the "Debate on the Plains" tournament, touted by many as one of the toughest of the year.
Many of the top squads from last year's nationals made up the field of the 23 colleges in attendance.
On Saturday, Brittney Doherty of Fort Scott broke into the Lincoln Douglas semifinals with a 3-1 record. Doherty made the best of the opportunity with a victory, advancing to the finals and finishing in second place.
Levi Weilert of Fort Scott also put himself among the nation's elite by earning a trip to finals in Poetry. Both students finished well enough to qualify for the National Forensic Association tournament next semester.
Garic Tinsely of Uniontown also had a strong showing, including two one-rankings to push him into semifinals from out of more than 60 competitors in Prose.
The performance of the squad helped them win the Junior College sweepstakes award. The team finished 10th overall among all schools competing.
