Coach pleased with Eagles' play at Fredonia
FREDONIA, Kan. -- Uniontown girls' golf coach Jason Tourtillott was pleased with the way his team played here Thursday even tough both the team and one of his players just missed out on earning medals.
"I am pleased with the way the girls played overall," Tourtillott said. "I keep thinking one of our seniors is going to break into the 40s at some point but just hasn't happened."
Senior Veronica Harrison led the Eagles with a 53 over nine holes despite taking an 8 on the first hole of the day. She missed a medal on the scorecard tie-breaker after she had tied with Chanute's Madison Fields and Yates Center's Emily Baker for 10th place.
Seniors Sabrena McAnulty and Emily Simpson both shot 54, tying for 13th.
"I felt like (Harrison) recovered really well," Tourtillott said. "Our other two seniors ... just had a hole or two trip them up a little."
First-year golfers Jordan Mason and Sara Heiman also played. Mason shot her best round of the season in finishing at 63. Heiman finished with an 81.
Caney Valley won the team title with its four-woman score of 194 with host Fredonia just three strokes back. Chanute was third at 215 and Uniontown placed fourth at 224.
The Eagles will host their own invitational Monday at Woodland Hills Golf Course in Fort Scott.
