To the Editor:
Some years ago, a Kansas governor referred to Fort Scott as a "bright spot" in Southeast Kansas. The willingness of Fort Scott citizen volunteers has, and continues to play, a major role in leaving this favorable impression.
Volunteers are the backbone of many good things happening in Fort Scott. Countless hours are readily and unselfishly given to every worthwhile project. Volunteerism could be compared to planting a tree.
The volunteers know they may never enjoy the shade or fruit the tree may provide, but we continue to plant the seeds.
Many of the positive happenings in Fort Scott are made possible and supported by volunteers -- our friends and neighbors who are willing to step forward and make it happen. The Fort Scott Community Gala is just another example of what happens when volunteers want to help their community remain a "bright spot" in Southeast Kansas.
We wish to say thank you to our community and especially to the following individuals who exemplify "volunteerism": Marlene Braker, Christa Horn, Becky Mann, Kale Nelson, Cathy Thomas, Shana Emerson, Elaine Kirby, Crystal Mason, Rachel Reeves, Barbara Trimbur, Terri Floyd, Lindsay Madison, Mark McCoy and Martha Scott.
And to all of you who have supported the Gala with your gifts and attendance throughout the years, we thank you.
