Friday, September 9, 2011

The Hepler High School Alumni Association met Sept. 3 at the Hepler Community Building. There were 74 people present and six no-shows representing classes from 1933 through 1961. President Maude Stringer Burns opened the meeting with the flag salute led by Kenny Armstrong.

The invocation was given by Kenny Armstrong. A meal was served by the Hepler Ruritan Club. Maude welcomed those in attendance and acknowledged those who have passed away since the group last met, followed by a prayer.

Those representing the honored classes were: 1936, Bud Harris; 1941, Jack Shireman, Tom Weston and Maxine Gooding Cuppet; 1946, Junior Kyser and Virginia Cochran Nelson; 1951, Margaret Huning Garrett; 1956, Noone representing this class; 1961, Robert Hurd, Norma Bird (read an interesting letter from Richard Meyer, Class of 1951, which told of his life since leaving HHS).

Maude gave a report from the officers suggesting that the alumni make a donation of $100 toward refinishing the floors in the community building and $65 for purchasing a new flag. Bob Burns made a motion that this be done, Lavonne Stoll Kmiec seconded the motion and the motion passed. The minutes of Sept. 4, 2010, were read and approved. Wayne Stringer mentioned receiving correspondence from Tom Hepler with wonderful comments regarding Mary Ann Kiser. The slate of officers presented for 2012 are as follows: Kenny Armstrong, president, Bill Harris, vice president, Norma Lee Lowe Bird, secretary, and Margaret Allison Titus, treasurer. Bob Burns made the motion that the slate of officers be accepted as presented for the coming year. Millie Mein Jackson seconded and the motion carried.

Kenny Armstrong spoke in closing, asking all to return next year, stating that we are a unique group and he would appreciate having a representative of the honored classes tell what their class members have been doing since they graduated.

Maude closed with a reading "The Church Seat," after which the group sang "God Bless America," accompanied by Norma Lee Bird.
