Racing across the country

Ruth Campbell/Tribune Solo Race Across America rider Dex Tooke makes his way toward Nevada, Mo., on U.S. Highway 54 after passing the time station in Fort Scott Tuesday afternoon. The individual and team competition goes from Oceanside, Calif., to Ocean City, Md. There are 41 individual competitors who entered the race and 53 teams this year. By the time Tooke reached the time station here, he had logged 1,706 miles completed in six days and 22 hours, according to his blog. For more details, see Sports.
