Airport Day returns
After turning a profit of nearly $1,000 during last year's festivities, the Airport Advisory Board has decided to host Airport Day again this year.
During a May 27 board meeting, the decision to host airport day was on the agenda. Despite turning a profit last year after being canceled in 2009, the discussion was not one-sided.
Board member Dallas Smith expressed the thought it would be better to host the event every two years, according to meeting minutes. Smith said he likes the idea of having a bigger, better bi-annual event rather than the same smaller event every year.
Despite the difference of opinion, the board unanimously approved hosting of Airport Day on Sept. 10, with a follow-up meeting to be set to further discuss the frequency of future Airport Day events.
Airport Day is hosted at the Fort Scott Municipal Airport and offered free to the public. The event features several aerobatic acts, aviation exhibits and other entertainment.
Airport Day was in jeopardy in 2009 after the Airport Advisory Board saw a decline in sponsors and donations as a result of the economic downturn. The lack of funding ultimately caused the cancellation of the annual event until it returned in 2010.
