A two-vehicle accident in Pittsburg on April 28 resulted in the death of a Pittsburg State University student.

The accident occurred at 12:42 a.m. at Fourth and Free King Highway, police said in a news release.

Matthew Steven Wright, 20, of Gardner, Kan., was traveling south on Free King Highway in a 2006 Ford F-150. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, the release said.

Three passengers were in his truck -- Nicholas J. Mauszychi, 20, Gardner, Kan., Michael R. Gorman, 20, of Olathe, and Taylor P. Godberson, 20, Olathe, the release said.

Wright's vehicle failed to yield the right of way to an eastbound 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Mattie Swanson, 65, of Jasper, Mo.

The Caravan struck the F-150, causing it to roll over on its top, police said. Swanson and Mauszychi were transported to Via Christi Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries they sustained, police said. Gorman and Godberson refused medical treatment, police said.

Wright was in his sophomore year at Pittsburg State University, majoring in mechanical engineering technology, according to a news release from PSU.

University President Steve Scott issued the following statement Thursday upon learning of Wright's death: "My heart goes out to all those involved in this morning's accident. I extend my deepest sympathies to Matthew's family and friends and offer condolences on behalf of the entire Pittsburg State University community."

Counselors are being made available to students and staff on campus, the release said.
