Alta "Irene" Herrero, 87 of Fort Scott, passed away Thursday evening, April 21, 2011, at the Via Christi Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kan., after a short illness.

Our mother was born Oct. 20, 1923 in Arcadia, Kan., to Wilson Anthony and Emma Pearl (Bradbury) Sheets. The family moved to Fort Scott when Mom was 5 years old, where she lived until her death.

Mom attended school in Fort Scott and graduated from high school in 1942. She married John R. Herrero of Tampa, Fla., on July 4, 1944. From this union were born three children; John W., Elizabeth and Thelma.

Mom was active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary (Life Member), and she was formerly a member of Eastern Star Topaz Chapter 325. She currently was a member of the Olive Chapter 13. She also served as chairperson for both the M.S. Walk and the FSHS Class of 1942.

Mom is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth (Jerry) Frey of Greenwood, Mo., and Thelma (Larry) Quirin of Redfield, Kan.; her brothers, Leslie Sheets of Edina, Mo., and L.B. Sheets of Clarksburg, Mo.; two sisters, Juanita Smith of Neodesha, Kan., and Louise Wilbur of Dewey, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Michelle Magaña, John Frey, James Frey, Sara Rahe, and John Jason Herrero; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John R., her son John W., and granddaughter Mary Quirin.

Funeral and Eastern Star services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with a visitation prior to the services beginning at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow at the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
