Tuesday, April 12, 2011

The Kansas Historical Society has announced that Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site will delay the opening of its visitor center exhibits due to maintenance issues. The site will now open Wednesday, April 27 for the spring and summer travel season. Visitor center hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday through the last Saturday in October. Visitors are welcome to tour the battlefield and walk the nature trail from dawn until dusk year-round. Admission to the visitor center exhibits is $3 for adults and $1 for students. KSHS, Inc., members and children 5 and under are admitted free. Mine Creek Battlefield is located one-half mile west of the intersection of U.S. 69 and K-52, three miles south of Pleasanton.

The Battle of Mine Creek was one of the largest cavalry battles in the Civil War and the largest battle in Kansas. Approximately 2,800 Union troops attacked and defeated nearly 8,000 Confederates along the banks of Mine Creek. After the battle, Federal forces pursued the Confederates in Missouri as they attempted to return to Arkansas, Indian Territory (Oklahoma), and eventually Texas.

The Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site is one of 16 state historic sites operated by the Kansas Historical Society, a state agency. For information call (913) 352-8890 or visit kshs.org/places/minecreek.
