Knopp wins high jump at Paola

PAOLA -- Senior Griffin Knopp won the boys' high jump at the Paola Invitational here Friday, clearing 6 feet, 6 inches to win the event by 6 inches.

It was just one of three individual wins for the Tigers here as the boys dropped from a first-place finish the week before at Labette County to seventh place here. Fort Scott girls were also seventh as a team.

The other two individual wins were claimed by the girls. Senior Megan McDermed won the javelin with a throw of 107 feet, 2 inches and freshman Katren Reinbolt took the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.94 seconds. Reinboldt's win was the first for a Fort Scott girl in that event since 2003, when Jill Cowen won the event at the Southeast Kansas Relays held in Fort Scott. That was also the last (known) time a Fort Scott girl ran the event in less than 50 seconds (Cowen had a 49.0 that day).

Paige Denton took second place in the girls' 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 42.55 seconds and third in the 3,200 in 12:53.70. Marliss Allen was third in the javelin with a mark of 104' 1". Reinbolt rounds out the girls' results with a fifth-place mark of 33' 2 1/2" in the triple jump.

Knopp claimed second place in the boys' 300-meter hurdles in 43 seconds flat and sixth in triple jump at 40' 6 1/4". Brady Fink was third in high jump at 5' 10", Drew Bryant was fifth in discus at 45' 11", and Cody McGehee took sixth in javelin at 147' 3".

Host Paola claimed the girls' team title with 109 points followed by Pittsburg with 92 and Louisburg with 89. Fort Scott finished with 43 points.

Paola also took the boys' team title with 128 points followed by Lansing with 126 and Louisburg with 97 1/2. Fort Scott scored 31 points.

Fort Scott's next meet is Friday at Independence.
